May Day Message From Nigeria NLC

The President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Comrade Abdulwahed I. Omar has asked Governors who cannot pay the new national minimum wage to give up their positions.
He disclosed this while addressing Nigerian workers on the commemoration of the International Workers’ Day held at Eagle Square in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
“On this note I must add comrades, that even those Governors who claimed that they cannot pay should be better informed now that the Bill has been signed into law and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Any Governor who claims he cannot pay the minimum wage of N18, 000 as provided for by the law of the federation or nation may as well relinquish his job,” Omar said.
According to Omar, the calls by some Governors for a review of the Revenue Allocation Formula to enable them have access to more resources to pay the new wage cannot be a condition precedent for the implementation of the new minimum wage.
He urged the government and Nigerian workers to ensure that the new minimum wage be implemented quickly in both public and private sectors, as well as to ensure that the implied adjustment of the general wage structure is undertaken.
