The European Union Election Observation Mission in Nigeria would soon publish its findings and recommendations concerning the recently held general elections in the country. This was contained in a statement by the EU delegation to Nigeria and read by its Head, Mr. David Macrae during a chat with newsmen yesterday.
The EU further congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan, the newly elected governors and legislators for their victory at the polls and hailed Nigerians for “the spirit of calm and restraint which characterized the conduct of the April elections that appear to be the most credible in the country.”
According to the EU Delegation: “ We congratulate the Nigerian people for their determination in exercising their right to vote for the democratic future of their country.”
The EU further condemned the violence surrounding the election, the loss of lives and displacement of people which ensued adding that the election was an important step towards consolidating democracy in Nigeria and should lead to better governance in the interest of the people of Nigeria and the broader region.
The Head of the EU delegation also used the occasion to present a prize which was won by Nseabasi Akpan – a Nigerian photographer that was among contestants- in a photo competition that took place at Addis-Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia last January.
