Over N10billion worth of transactions took place at the just concluded Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) second Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted nationwide on
Saturday. Of this amount, JAMB raked in directly about N6.9billion while cyber café owners smiled home with close to N3 billion with other service providers accounting for the remaining amount.
Daily Champion verified that with JAMB disclosing that a total of 1,493,603 candidates wrote the examination after buying the forms at N4,600 across board, the matriculation exam body smiled home with N6,870, 573,800.00 billion.
The candidates were expected to register their forms for the examination at cyber café and investigation showed that the rate was as much as N2,500 for the services but an average price of N2,000 will give a figure of N2,987,206,000.00 billion.
That was not all as the candidates were supposed to load a recharge card of about N100 minimum so as to be able to receive alert services concerning the examination and that give additional amount of N149, 360,300.00 million.
JAMB had earlier in the year justified the amount of money to be paid by the candidates on the ground that they will be provided with the materials needed for the examination ranging from comfortable classrooms, pencils, calculators and this was communicated to the candidates in their printed-out slip.
However, few days to the examination, Registrar and Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde informed newsmen that the candidates should come to the examination centres with their writing materials as back up for the ones that will be provided by JAMB.
After the examination, reports had it that there were pockets of complain around the country over allegation that the Board failed to provide the promised materials and most of the candidates did not get the information concerning the change in decision that they should come with their own writing materials.
Also, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), candidates had to write their examination using plastic chairs without desk after paying for such service.
JAMB like other examination bodies rake in billions of naira annually from Nigerians, some of who do not get the commensurate service to the amount of money paid.
This is even as some candidates disclosed that they bought and filled the JAMB form at prices as high as N7,500 while many were duped by cyber café who engaged in double registration thereby denying the affected candidates the opportunity to write the examination as was witnessed at the centre monitored in Abuja alongside the JAMB boss, Prof. Ojerinde.---Daily Champion
