The Nigerian embassy in Germany has started a census to ascertain the accurate population of Nigerians living in the country, an official of the embassy has said.
Mr Femi Rotimi, the Charge d’ Affaires in the embassy made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria yesterday in Berlin.
“We have been told that Nigerians here are about 40,000, but we have an ongoing project to take an accurate census of the Nigerian population in Germany.
“But we are handicapped in that too because quite a number of our citizens don’t want to be involved, especially those who, for one reason or the other, are too afraid; they don’t want to be identified.
“It is not because they don’t like Nigeria; but because identifying with us could expose them to the legal system of the host authority, especially those who don’t have residency and those who have immigration problem.”
Rotimi said the embassy had also embarked on a campaign to sensitise Nigerians living in the country on the need to promote the image of Nigeria through good conduct.
According to him, there is a vibrant Nigerian community in Germany who are engineers, doctors and ICT experts, among others.-Vanguard
