A disclosure has come that out of the 1,493,000 candidates that sat for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)/JAMB last Saturday, about 842,941 scored below the 200
pass mark.
The Registrar/Chief Executive of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof Dibu Ojerinde, who disclosed this yesterday while announcing the release of the result, said 55.78 per cent (833,082) of the applicants were males and 44.22 per cent (660,522) females.
He also said that candidates could access their results without the usual scratch card by logging on to www.jamb.org.ng with their registration numbers.
According to him, 201,798 candidates scored between one and 169, while 641,143 scored between 170 and 199.
Among those that scored pass mark, 485,426 made between 200 and 249, 67,732 got between 250 and 269, 31,444 scored between 270 and 299, while 2,892 scored 300 and above.
In the examination, which was conducted throughout the federation and six foreign countries, including Ghana, Republic of Cameroon, Benin, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and South Africa, Ojerinde added that for the second year running, the UTME has continued to show higher preference for universities ahead of other tertiary institutions, in spite of the constraints in universities’ capacities.
He stated out of 1.4million candidates that sat for the examination, a total of 99,195 chose University of Lagos.
Other universities with high demands include Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, with 89,760 applications; University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 88,177; Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, 84,719; and University of Benin with 80,976.

The JAMB Registrar regretted that University of Lagos, which recorded the highest applications, could only admit 9,507, against the 99,115 candidates that applied to study in the institution.
The JAMB boss also lamented candidates’ inability to adhere to the Board’s instruction, which has resulted in 28,000 incomplete results.
Meanwhile, 7,504 results are still being investigated, while 15,160 cases of examination malpractices were recorded.
Also, statistics showed that Imo State, with 113,543 has the highest number of candidates, followed by Delta with 93,971, constituting 7.60 and 6.29 per cent respectively.
On the other hand, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Zamfara State recorded the lowest numbers of applications with 5,253 and 3,093 respectively. -guardian
